Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa
Day 3-060
8 hrs, 6 kms

Today, after 4 nights in Cape Town, I'm finally moving on . Buoyed by my positive experience in Cape Town and Paarl, I'm going to stop in a couple more "safe" towns along the coast before continuing on to my next country: Lesotho.

My first stop will be Stellenbosch, which is still more of a suburb of Cape Town. Surrounded by mountains and beautiful vineyards, this city has a character all of its own, with a distinct architecture that consist of white buildings with a baroque-like facade blended with a thatch roof rustice look... quite beautiful.

I wander freely through the town, stopping in at a small museum... snapping pictures... just enjoying the vibe. Down by the stream a pull out a guitar and a young fellow joins me. After playing a few songs he tells me a bit about his struggles.

"The problems here in South Africa are mainly between whites and blacks. We coloureds are always stuck in the middle" he also complained about how easy it is for professional foreigners to get jobs here, making it more difficult for the locals.

For a change, I stop in a classy restaurant for lunch. This could easiy pass for Beverly Hills... all around this place oozes with luxury and ease. I notice that even the waiters and shopkeepers are white here. I can see how easy it would be in this place to forget about the troubles of the rest of the country.

After I'm done I walk two blocks...yes, two blocks... and look around. Crowds of people, not a single white person.

What is going on? Wow. The racial divisions nowadays may not be in the lawbooks, but they are very, very real here in South Africa.
