We left Kalgoorlie at 7.30am and that was after we had been into the CBD of Kal. When Gary and Vicki dropped us off on Wednesday night, Vicki told us about the Jacaranda trees in Egan Street that had been decorated with crocheted and knitted squares as an arts week project. I didn't think I would get Peter to 'Do It', but it does help if one gets out of bed early!I thought the Jacaranda's in Burt Street were lovely, but as Vicki said "The ones in Egan Street are nicer still". With the storm clouds behind the trees, the early morning trip was justified. We also saw Brendan riding his bike to work along Burt Street. He hasn't had any desire to get his driver's licence following the loss of a mate in a car accident. Time is the healer and he is getting his driving hours up now and should have his licence by February. We had a good trip apart from the road works at Coolgardie. The storm had made the red dirt nice and sticky! So much so Peter says "He will probably have to take the van out to Drummonds and top dress the lawn out there".
Much better idea, than the mess it will make on the pavers at Bluff Point.Morning tea stop was Southern Cross. It had also rained there, so we just pulled into a service station, rather than more mud at the spot we had enjoyed morning tea in December. As we travel along the memories are discussed. We were in Keller by lunchtime. We did plan to stay the night in Kellerberrin. I had made contact with a cousin who lives there. Nancy is on the Carrott side of the family. Her Mum was the third born of 12 children. With her husband Ray, they moved back to Kellerberrin to live 9 years ago. I didn't do a search and find her phone number and address before we left for Tamworth. Naughty, naughty! When we pulled up at Ray and Nancy's house, I couldn't believe we had been parked there for our hospital photo shoot in December. Memories, memories again! Val, Julie and I were born at Kellerberrin Hospital and we had the paparazzi taking photos on the cameras and iPads. But the important thing is that we did make time on the way home to catch up with a cousin, that I really have not had much to do with over the years. After we had some lunch I rang Nancy and they were happy for us to go there then. We spent a couple of hours together over a cuppa. Sixty years ago on the 2nd September, Nancy's sister who was not quite 16 was killed in a car accident at Doodlakine. Jackie was driving the car and she was actually staying with my Mum and Dad at the time. Her parents, Nancy and brother Richard were on holiday in England. Mum had spoken of this family tragedy on a number of occasions. My Dad was actually working for Nancy's Dad at the time and he went with volunteers to the accident. Mum also said "That Frank, Nancy's Dad always held them partly responsible". Nancy told me yesterday that Jackie was supposed to have gone to Kalgoorlie to stay with Nanna and Pop Carrott. She had spent her money and didn't have enough for the fare. I have always wondered why Mum and Dad had the responsibility of this young niece, when they had 3 young children themselves and Mum's mother living with them.
At 3.30pm with some snaps of photos of the Skellern family, including Jackie, we decided to head off, with the aim of getting to Goomalling or Wongan Hills. We made Wongon Hills by 5.00pm and stayed at the privately owned park for $21.60. As we left in the morning we waved to the lady who had booked us in. She was walking the eldest of three young children to school. We are so glad we stayed at their park last night. 6 photos
