Homeward...Playing the World's Longest Golf Course

Saturday, October 25, 2014
Ceduna, South Australia, Australia
There is only one thing left to do on this trip of 'Travelling Oz 2014', and that is to play 'The World's Longest Golf Course'.  So that we will do as we go back across the Nullarbor.  We have purchased our score cards which were not cheap at $70.00 each, but what the heck!  We are going to do it, and when you have paid that sort of money, we will stop and do it!  The last hole of the 72 par course is 1,365 kilometres away at Kalgoorlie.  The lady at the Visitor Centre said "Some days she sells 10 cards".  So obviously it is still popular.  She also told us that a couple had left Kambalda this week to work their way across the Nullarbor mowing the fairways.  She said "It should be nice for us".  We will see!  This morning we played our first two holes here in Ceduna.  No 1 is a Par 5 named 'Oyster Beds'.  We both had a six.  I was pretty pleased with that.  Bear in mind we only have 5 sticks, and they are all mine!  So Pete's a bit disadvantaged.  We have my 3 wood, a 3, 5 and 7 iron and a putter.   All in a grey cloth bag that Peter had me make before we left home.   There was only one tiny gap left in one of the caravan boots for golf sticks!  The bag really is a classic!  We certainly will look the part when we step onto the $21 million golf course at Kalgoorlie!  Hole No 2 is a Par 4 and it is named 'Denial Bay'.  Denial Bay is where the oysters are grown here.  We went out there for a look when we were here in January.  I had a six and Peter a 7.  He put his second shot over the fence into the showground.  So two holes played and we have one less golf ball in the little carry bag.  The bag containing the golf balls and tees, is a blue water bottle bag.  Another piece of 'Classic Golf Gear'!  Peter has made us some tees from water bottles on the suggestion of the lady at the Visitor Centre.  She said "We would need them when we got out onto the Nullarbor and the hard stuff"!  We were speaking with Peter's nephew this morning, who works in Kalgoorlie, and I told him my aim was to crack 150.   That did bring a chuckle!  We are all ready to set off in the morning.  We think we will be close to the border tomorrow night.  So we have made a potato salad and a coleslaw to get us through to Norseman.  Washing has been done today, so we are all organised.  We think a coleslaw will be okay, but once again we will see!  I will be annoyed if they do take it off us!Hopefully we have a reasonable sleep tonight.  Last nights sleep was interrupted by our indigenous friends at 4.30am this morning.  They were arguing and fighting on the street at the back of the van.  Tonight they have already started and it is only 8.30pm.  So we may be in for a long night.
We had dinner at the hotel tonight, which was very nice.  We have not eaten out much at all over the last few months.   Just as happy to do our own thing in the van.  So we got ourselves out of the 'Caravan Clothes' and wore something a little better!   There was a toast to a wonderful holiday.  'WA here we come'.  'We are homeward bound'. 8 photos
