ZAPPEION – Conference and Exhibition Centre

I leave behind the Temple of Zeus and I cross the busy road . I am heading towards the impressive Zappeion Exhibition and Conference Centre of Athens. It is just next to the National Garden which I am to go afterwards.

The neoclassical mansion was financed by Evangelos Zappas and is inherent with modern Greek history.

The mansion was designed by the Danish architect T. Hansen. It took years to finish and finally it was ready in November of the year 1874.

The impressive mansion bears the architecture of the neoclassical style as I mentioned above with its propylon in Corinthian style. The surrounding gardens were the picture of Athens in the early 20th century.

It includes about 25 rooms. The building was used in the Olympic Games in 1896 for the fencing championships, and again during the Olympics of 2004 was a press and events centre.

Historical events took place here with paramount the historic signing of the Treaty of Accession to the European Union, and it is the press centre in all General Elections.

"The small parliament" this is how it used to be called by some people and this because the round area of its premises was the meeting point of many elderly Athenians who were discussing the hot political subject of the day.

It is indeed very impressive and I am sure you agree with me.

Nice! I have been here, in front of the entrance. but a serious man (Guardian) was beside there to not allowing people to go inside (maybe there was a particular program inside). So I took some pictures from outside and I went back to my hotel via lovely presidential street.
Thanks for the belle epoque entry.

Hi Kaveh, and thank you for the comment. I got permission to enter the premises that was the reason why you were not allowed to enter.
At least my entry gave you the chance to get a good picture of what you lost. I like these photos and they are so clear and some of them are beautiful.
