Meeting Lybian wounded soldiers: Another sunset!!

Paleo Faliro, Attica, Greece
The next morning I want to capture the sunrise so I thought to get up earlier. I woke up in time - but where is the sun!!

It is very dark outside, heavy showers and disappointing! Poseidonos Avenue has very few cars at first but much later and still dark outside the lights from the cars in the dark avenue look like a glowing flow . There won't be any walk today unfortunately. Plans change so after breakfast we take the car and go to see the kids. Half of the day spent with family members and when we return we have a wonderful lunch on the 7th floor and in the afternoon I came up again for some capuccino while Yianni wants to get an afternoon nap and watch the news.

This time I am not alone but I am with the company of two ladies, Thalia and Marina from the hotel. We have a long pleasant chat talking about everything and anything. The view from the 7th floor is very different today from the beginning of the day.

I won’t try hard to describe this second sunset (see my photos). We were talking with the ladies and at the same time I could not stop looking outside along the coastal area up to Piraeus. Colors in the sky were changing all the time from light blue to grey and white to silver. Anyway, I was lavishly rewarded from the spectacular silver sunset which I witnessed and did not regret a single moment of this wonderful day .

Dinner time and we thought to try the a la carte menu tonight which I highly recommend. Before getting down to our room I tell Yianni that I want to chat with a few guys whom I met earlier down at the reception so we go and sit at their table. Seeing us approaching they were happy.

They are coming from Lybia -soldiers wounded from the war there. All their expenses are covered by their Government until they recover completely and return to their country. Everyone will leave back by the end of March. Each day mini buses pick them up from the different hotels that host them and drive them to hospitals or clinics depending on each ones needs. They are about 35 at this hotel but there are scattered in other hotels even in some central ones in Athens.

They hardly know any English and they are nice people. They suffered hardships undreamed-of. They lost family members and friends. One showed me a photo of his fiance shot dead on his cell phone. The boy with the red white and grey pullover had taken up his shirt to show me the huge operation he had on his stomach and belly while we were the two of us in the lift on my way to meet Marina and Thalia. The guy on my other side is learning Greek and wants so much to remain in Greece he confessed. Pity though that they could not speak either Greek or English other than a few sentences.

A wonderful stay, I met interesting people and it was fun in all.

Beautiful sunset. But very heart wrenching about the wounded Lybians. I can't even imagine the hardships they have been through. Another lovely post, Popi.
