PANAGIA VILLAGE THASOS

This beautiful village is situated a few kms south of Thasos Town (Limenas) .

It is a traditional village with rich history and it is one of the richest villages of the Island. It has become the capital of the island after the revolution in 1821.

Panagia village is located in a beautiful location among verdant trees, and it is full of running water.

The Church of the village is very old and famous….unfortunately we came here late and again we found the church closed. They close after 2pm.

Panagia is the Greek name of Virgin Mary, and has given the name to the village.

The houses here are traditionally built with covered balconies and schist roofs and usually their interiors adorned with wood.

The village is very famous for its syrup sweets, its walnuts, and figs . Many taverns and cafes are scattered all over the village and the round square. The streets are quite narrow, and it is a bit hard to find a parking space.

It is here in this beach called Hrisi Amoudia – Golden Beach in English- that I came to have access on the internet and check my e mails. It is not very far from Kinira, the place where our hotel was.
