Day of the glaciers

Olden, Western Norway, Norway
Another walk today. This time only 45 minutes or so uphill on smooth tracks. Quite a few stairs but no rocks. Piece of cake!

The Briksdalsbreen (Glacier) is set in spectacular countryside. Located in the Jostedalsbreen National Park, the glacier is surrounded by roaring waterfalls, green and mossy rocks, tall mountain peaks and green meadows. All in the one spot.

The glacier is in the same valley as the place where we are staying for a few days, Olden. We travel up the valley and beside the fjord. The road is quite narrow at times, and the tour buses we meet make for some tight moments. We see lots of huts for rent on the way. Just like in other countries many farmers are adding holiday accommodation to their farming business.

It was a beautiful day today - actually quite warm. There was no breeze and the water was still. Another beautiful day for reflections - of all kinds. The track up was quite busy even though many of the tour people were taken up in 'Trollcars'. Well most of the way. There was still a bit for them to walk. Once farmers used to take tourists up to the glacier on their tractors. That sideline is now finished but the farmers history here lives on as they built the road that leads out this way.

The glacier is impressive, and the blue pool at its base quite lovely. Apparently the waterfall below the glacier has a flow of 10,000 litres per second, so together with all the other waterfalls around here there is a lot of water coming down the mountains.

Back at the car park we searched for a shady table for lunch as we were feeling the heat by then. But no time to waste, as there was another glacier to see. This time in the next valley - the Lodalen Valley. Here the valley, though quite narrow had more farmland. Everywhere were farmers cutting grass. Guess that goes on all summer preparing for the winter ahead.

The Brenndalsbreen glacier was smaller but no less impressive. And as everywhere here the scenery magnificent. Tomorrow we head again to the high roads.
