Fjallbacka, West Coast, Sweden
Nearly 440 kms done today as we drove from Lillehammer in Norway to Fjallbacka in Sweden. Drove half way or so on a motorway where tolls were regularly applied. We will be glad to leave Norway's road tolls behind.

I mentioned earlier that we had loved the scenery in the television series 'Morden'. It is based on a series of books by Camilla Lackberg about murders in this fishing village - Fjallbacka. So we had to have a look. It is just as beautiful in real life. Set around a harbour, and backed by the Vetteberget, an 80m high outcrop of rock, it is a picture perfect village, The houses have pastel coloured trims and lovely cottage gardens. The harbour bobs with boats, and everywhere are boatsheds and holiday huts. There were quite a few tourist but apparently no where near as many as will be here when school breaks for summer.

Re the books that started our journey here, after reading the first couple in the series we think the television conversion of the books was well done, as the books are disappointing. Maybe they lose something in translation but it is hard to believe Lackberg's books outsell Stieg Larssen's books.

Actress Ingrid Bergman also put Fjällbacka on the map. She came here for the first time in 1958 and spent many summers with her family on the island of Dannholmen, just across the water. Her husband, the theatrical impresario Lars Schmidt introduced her to Fjällbacka and they spent every summer there until her death in 1982. After she died her ashes were scattered here. The town has a square with a statue of her. At the moment the square has an exhibition of private photos of Ingrid Bergman taken by local residents. Lovely to see. In the pictures she seemed most unpretentious when here.

Our day was rounded off nicely by a visit to Ibrahim's Pizza shop. We hadn't planned to eat out but were taken by the look of Ibrahim's shop right on the harbour. He was very chatty. Comes from Lebanon and only opens here in the summer, Apparently soon it will be very busy, but tonight only one other table. Pizza was very thin and very good. So if ever you are in Hamburgsund (in summer), do try it.
