Driving south

Lillehammer, Eastern Valleys, Norway
We are at a turning point in our trip as we have gone as far north in Norway as we have time for and have now come south to Lillehammer.

We took a couple of diversions from the direct route to include some scenic roads. The first was the Tourist Route through Rondane National Park. This is Norway's oldest national park, known for its reindeer herds (we didn't see any), and as an alpine hiking area. The alpine vegetation is certainly a change from what we have been seeing. Here growth is sparse and dry. In some area the ground looks as though it is covered with snow but it is actually lichen. There are high peaks, low lakes and lots of lichen covered rock.

There is stacks of accommodation here, both ski lodges and basic hiking huts, and many hiking groups were taking advantage of the warm sunny weather. We wove our way around numerous bends and steep inclines to end up back on the E6.

We had started early so there was plenty of time to divert again to the Peer Gynt Road. This road winds through the mythical country of Peer Gynt and the trolls. It is a gravel toll road, and once again popular with the hikers and bikers. Great for them as there are not many cars.

We now find that we need to adapt our expectations from the last few weeks, where every day has been a never-ending panorama of pictures worthy of postcards. We have seen greenness, and lushness, and such spectacular mountains, valleys, fjords, waterfalls, glaciers etc, that it takes a lot for us to go 'wow'. For us the roads today, though beautiful, were different, and we need to get used to different 'beautiful'. I am sure it won't be a problem.
