Strensall, England, United Kingdom
I don’t believe it there is actually more blue sky than grey clouds this morning, even though it rain overnight. Keep fingers crossed it stays like this for the next three days when we are in York. The school holidays plus being a weekend is going to be a problem with finding a caravan site in York, the close sites to York were fully booked last night. In our travels this is the first time we have had problems booking. Even Edna had problems finding us a site, Vic’s friends CL is fully booked.
Finally found a site Moorside Caravan Park in Strensall, I thought it was 1.8kms from York but it is 6 miles too late to cancel and we need somewhere to pitch in York, as wild camping is really out of the question. Need to vacant as it is after 11am and security is patrolling the caravan site, which in a way is good you feel safe on a large complex.
Bypassing Knaresborough from outer Harrogate on the A658 to connect to the A59 normal views from shrub, tree lined road of woodlands, fields of different grains, sheep grazing, lots of roundabouts, over bridges and rivers through a lot of Industrial Estates, farms and towns till Poppleton Bar where we entered the ring road A1237 round York. Merging traffic was fun, then a build-up of traffic and we were on what I call the big carpark for miles (at least we know where all the shopping centres are) till we turned onto Strensall Road which took us to Moorside Caravan Park out in the sticks.
We had second thoughts but then changed our minds when we saw the small site with fishing pond and a couple of chap’s setup for fishing by the pond. For them it is the enjoyment of catching and releasing the carp fish.
There is a bus terminal just 10 minute’s walk away over the railway crossing where we catch the No.5 to York and another 15 minutes further on is the village to have a roast with Yorkshire pudding for a late lunch/dinner.
So far it has not rained the grey clouds look menacing and it has drizzled a couple of times. Had a leisurely walk through the woods by the railway line to the village and the Ship Inn for a delicious roast lamb dinner the lamb melted in your mouth. Very large serving but we managed to share a dessert before waddling back to the caravan site for a rest before walking round the pond watching a family of Canadian geese feeding by the pond.
It’s 7pm and I hope the trains have stopped for the night or the Warden will be in trouble with us for telling whoppers saying only a steam train travels one way during the day, which we haven’t seen so far.
