1976 Reaching the East Coast

Saint Martins, Saint Philip, Barbados
3 hrs, 4.9 kms
Day Totals: 16 hrs, 22 .9 kms

It does feel nice to be strolling through the "real" Barbados, just normal local folks living normal lives... houses... shops... schools... churches... Of course, tourism is still the center of the economy, and many of these people are going to commute to the touristy areas for jobs every day. This is a problem because, well, tourism is unsteady. Many of them lose their jobs in the slow season and when there's a global economic recession, the whole island suffers.

St Martins has a nice, typical Anglican church and another spacious park. It's getting a bit late, but I figure I could hike as far as the Atlantic Coast for a good stopping point. I take a side road this direction where I find more sprawl... the whole area has been divided into house plots... some are being used and some not. I notice that a number of people are non natives--my guess is that a lot of these plots are sold to Americans, Canadians and Europeans who either build vacation homes, retirement homes... or have enough money stashed away that they can just come and chill here indefinitely.

Finally I reach the jagged cliffs overlooking the Atlantic. There's a sharp wind and fierce waves below--quite a contrast with the relaxing beaches on the south shores. Once again I'm glad I came to see this "other side" of the island.

And with that, I wander back to the main road where I catch a night bus straight back to my pad... and call it a day.
