1975 "Real" Barbados

Gemswick, Saint Philip, Barbados
2 hrs, 4 kms

From the beach I follow a long shadeless road inland . There are houses all along the way interspersed with empty lots. The whole area feels very poorly planned with houses being built randomly across the countryside, rather than clustered together into towns. There are occasionally interesting houses with the traditional Caribbean style of decorative eaves--but most homes are pretty generic.

One of the main reasons for this sprawl is that Barbados is flat. Unlike the previous 3 island which were created by volcanoes, Barbados was created by coral. And being flat means no natural barriers to keep people from building and building... until all space is used up.

I reach the airport, and sit and chill and people watch for a bit. I notice how many mixed race couples there are. Here in the Caribbean that's not something you even bat an eye at. It's just as perfectly normal as any other marriage...

After the airport, the scenery changes a bit. There is some actual farmland... the houses are a bit smaller and simpler and some of the side roads are dirt. I wouldn't say "poor"--just maybe a bit more basic. I reach what I guess I'll define as a town, where there's a nice shady park, and do my Parkbench concert.
