1989 Meeting a True Calypso Musician

I wander along side roads along the border with St George Parish on one side and St Thomas on the other . The map I got from the airport has been quite helpful in choosing the best route.

At a little shop, a couple of guys invite me in to play some music. They look like decent folks, so I accept. After I sing a couple of songs we get to talking, they buy me a drink and tell me their stories. I get a better glimpse of the living situation of folks here. One young fellow has been to Florida "just on vacation" he says. He doesn't seem to be in any big rush to try to immigrate there. The owner of the shop actually lived in New York for many years and his grown children are still there. Now it seems he enjoys the more peaceful life of running a small local store in his native village...

But there's more to his story. He's known as "Termite" and was a fairly successful calypso singer in New York City and recorded several albums. But he hasn't played music in 7 years. With a little pushing from all of us he finally agrees and pulls out his guitar and does a couple of calypso tunes--including an original. He seems to be getting back into his groove quickly.

"We're glad you came" one of the fellows tells me. "He hasn't played music in a long time--now you encouraged him to pull out his guitar again!"

Looks like this is turning out to be an interesting day after all...
