1985 The Bouldertop Parkbench

Bathsheba, Barbados
3 hrs, 6 kms

I walk along the beach for several miles . Finally I spot a couple of fellow humans up ahead. It looks like they're on a tour bus. They get off the bus. Walk down to the beach. Walk back to the bus. Leave.

Folks... that's not the way to do it...

Suddenly up ahead I spot a massive coral boulder that's just sitting mysteriously on the beach, maybe 12 meters high. How did it get there? Did it fall off the mountain? Too far away. Washed ashore? impossible.

Then something else mysterious catches my eye... Is that a... park bench on top of it? No way! I walk around the boulder. No, there's not easy pathway up it. Looks like whoever put that park bench there expects people just to scale the boulder's jagged walls to get to it!

There's no way I can turn down this challenge. After all, this is the Parkbench Concert tour--and that is the coolest boulder I've come across! I must climb that boulder--or perish in the undertaking .

Unfortunately I don't feel I can take the guitar up with me, so this is going to have to be an air guitar concert--but at least I'll climb it... and I do... feeling like I'm 15 again when i reach the top. I notice a couple of passerbys looking at me curiously, then walking around the boulder trying to figure out how I got up there...

This is turning out to be my best day in Barbados yet. And the adventures just continue. Up ahead, the shoreline turns into jagged cliffs--but it looks like I might still be able to follow it. I find a sort of trail to follow. But on the other side the path disappears and there's nothing but thick plant growth.

Could it be? I dive under the plant growth, and, sure enough there's a hidden path way that takes you into a Middle Earth-style hidden world under this dense growth, hidden from the world outside...

I come out the other side and find myself in the town of Bathsheba. There are a couple of tourists here--more of the backpacker type rather than the resort tourists. I would have to say this is probably going to be my favorite place in all of Barbados. Over every ridge and around every corner is another cool, rugged view with rock formations rising from the water.
