Travel Day

Another cold morning, but it was sunny . We headed north on US 283 and then west on US
24 to “Nicodemus National Historic Site”. Nicodemus is a town settled after the
Civil War by freed slaves as a town just for black settlers, it as a farming
town that thrived until the railroad bypassed the town, since then it has
declined until today the population is less than 20. It is still an incorporated town and the
National Park Service leases several buildings that form the National Historic
Site. The Park Service is working very
closely with the town to insure the continued protection of the town. From Nicodemus we headed west on US 24 to the
town of Hoxie, where we turned south on Rt. 23 to I-70, and west on I-70 to the
town of Oakley. From Oakley we headed
west on US 40 part of the “Western Vistas Historic Byway”, this drive as most
of the day was through rolling countryside with numerous views of farmland that
seemed to go on forever, without many trees to obstruct your vision the farmland
seems to go on to the horizon, just like sanding on the beach and looking out
to sea. We continued west to the town of
“Sharon Springs” where we turned north on Rt. 27 to I-70 and the town of Goodland;
form Goodland we traveled west on I-70
to the town of Seibert CO. Driving over
I-70 in CO we saw several patches of snow along the fence line. We are spending the night at the Shady Grove Campground;
this is a small but friendly campground.

Watch out for those Western storms - they can be a doozie. Enjoying your blog and wishing we were traveling with you. But we are - aren't we. Be well and be safe. Keep em' coming.

Going from flat Kansas into the mountains...isn't our diverse topography wonderful to experience. Brrr, snow. Who would have thought in May and not even into the mountains yet. Glad you are getting away from tornado alley...those storms are awful. Looks like you were able to get some photos of the terrible storms forming, though. Glad you are seeing such great places and enjoying yourselves. I am vicariously traveling with you...it's great. Safe travels. Love.
