Visiting Ajdovskina

Vrhpolje, Ajdovščina, Slovenia
Its so nice to be in the countryside, but whoever said that it's quiet obviously hasn't been here! Its a different kind of noise though: we're opposite a small school & the nursery/reception class seem to play outside all the time; the other side of the site is the local basketball net with inevitable teenagers, the church bell strikes every quarter of an hour and its obviously sort your crops/field/vines out time as its a tractor speedway down our little road.
We had a chilled morning - caught up on some chores & generally blobbed. This afternoon we went to the nearest town to do some shopping and have a look at the Roman remains: Ajdovscina's Roman town was called Castra & there are some sections of walls plus a tower remaining. They are still finding lots of stuff as well - the main square is an archaeological dig & we watched people uncovering more of the Thermae or Bath House.
This whole area is surrounded by hills & we went up there to see the remains of iron smelting furnaces from the 15/1600s. It really WAS peaceful up there, just us & a couple of geckos sunning ourselves - easy to do today as it was 30deg C.
