Today dawned with 20 deg & sun, so we went off to see the Croatian Lake district called Plitvice Lakes. Its a National Park & World Heritage site & deserves every one of it's accolades.
The landscape is limestone & the terraced lakes are all a beautiful turquoise, with waterfalls round every tree & tussock. There are many, many km of trails through the forests & quite a lot of elevated wooden walkways - I was very pleased that I managed around 5km of trails without too much pain in my troublesome hip or back.
It turned out to be a very good idea to enter the Lakes at Entrance 2 as it was much less crowded than at Entrance 1. We met a nice Russian couple called Marina & Lev who live in New York, & ended up spending the day with them - hence we've got several pics of us at various falls! We returned the favour and took theirs, of course.
Our first activity was to get the boat across the lake to walk round one of the upper lakes. The 4 of us strolled round, stopping for pictures round every corner as yet another waterfall was revealed. They came in all shapes and sizes: tall and thin, tall and wide, short and trickly, wide and gushing and all points in between.
We then got the boat down the length of the largest lake & walked round some of the lower lakes to the largest waterfall, Veliki Slap. (Waterfalls are called Slap here, which is quite a fitting name!) The whole place was full of coach parties, mainly Asian or school parties - we were really glad we'd started at the upper falls as the queues for the boats & walkways lower down were horrendous.
Us & the Russians treated ourselves to a taxi back to the cars at Entrance 2 – it cost €2 each so a bargain - and no pain for me! It was a really lovely day
