1427. A Forgotten Castle

Monday, December 31, 2012
Burgau, Algarve, Portugal
Day 174
2 hrs, 4 .0 kms

As the road winds up the hillside above the coast, I get another welcome sight: an abandoned castle overlooking the sea, begging to be explored. This castle is mostly in ruins, and has more of a standard European feel rather than the Moorish style of Andalucian castles. It's of gray rock with a simple arched entrance, positioned on a high lookout ridge overlooking the sea... wandering through it and climbing up in its walls you still feel the fading sense of another era, when pirates or invaders could show up on you coast at any time to pillage and plunder...

I continue on to the village of Burgau. Here I do come a cross some big, ugly summer house developments from the boom years that have been left to rot... One thing the economic crisis did do was save this area from being turned into a big massive summer beach home area for northern Europeans...

... at least for now...
