We went to Tam Coc to spend the Tet away from the madness of Hanoi. It worked perfectly. Tam Coc is also known as the terrestrial Halong Bay which mean rocks spike the landscape. We cycled through rice field to reach the different sites.

We stopped at a temple build at the foot of a rock . The temple itself was nothing special but we went up the stairs behind it to reach a temple build in a cave. We were about to walk back down when we notice we could go around that temple up few stairs into a huge cave with some statues of Buddha and then even further to the top of the rock. I guess the spikes are about 80 to 100 meters high so you get a great view.

THE tourist thing to do in the area is to rent a rowing boat to follow the river and see caves underneath the rocks. Our boat was rowed by an old lady who sang songs most of the way. It was really cool. As we departed a bit late, we were more or less the last ones on the river. The last cave was truly big and impressive. Pictures don't make it justice. It was too dark.

On our second day, we cycled to the ancient capital of Hoa Lu. Well, what is left of it…two temples and one square place. We would have loved to have some explanation in English about what happened here before as well as the history of each temple . We were a bit deceived by it but we really enjoyed the way there across rice fields and small villages. We had to ask our way many times and people were friendly. However, if they don’t understand where you want to go or don’t know it they will send you in a random direction. So it is better to check you are on the right way quite often.

Notable encounter: we were going up a rock when Efli almost walked on a bright green snake. It was about 1m20, very thin. We stopped and took some pictures. Then the snake just went away. In the evening, we asked what kind of snake that could be and the woman at the hotel look horrified. Apparently, if you get bitten, you are very likely to die. Seeing a deadly snake: DONE.

On est allé à Tam Coc pour se mettre au calme et éviter la frénésie du Tet à Hanoi. Mission accomplie. Tam Coc est aussi connu comme la baie d'Halong terrestre donc le paysage est parsemé de rochers qui émergent de nulle part. On s'est baladé en vélo à travers les rizières. On s'est arrêté dans un petit temple au pied d'un rocher. Le temple en lui même n'avait rien de spécial, cependant en montant les quelques marches à l'arrière on est tombé sur un temple dans une grotte. On allait redescendre quand on s'est rendu compte qu'il y avait encore des marches à l'arrière, au fond de la grotte. En haut il y avait une autre grotte, immense avec quelques statues de Bouddha. En poursuivant le chemin on a pu monter tout en haut des rochers et donc avoir une vue plongeante sur la région alentour . Les rochers font environ 80-100m. 

LE truc touristique du coin, c'est de louer une barque avec rameur et d'aller voir les grottes sous les rochers. Notre rameuse était une vieille dame qui a chanté en Vietnamien presque tout le long du trajet. On est parti un peu tard alors on était plus ou moins les seules sur le trajet. La dernière grotte était vraiment immense avec des jeux de lumière couleur. 

Pour notre deuxième jour, nous nous sommes aventurées un peu plus loin mais toujours à vélo. On est allé jusqu'à l'ancienne capitale de Hoa Lu. On a été un peu déçu de ne trouver que des informations très sommaires. Le site aurait mérité bien plus. A l'aller comme au retour nous avons dû demander notre chemin une ou deux fois, les gens étaient très sympas. Cependant, il faut savoir que quand le Vietnamien ne comprend pas ou ne sait pas il va quand même vous envoyer dans une direction. Donc il vaut mieux vérifier et demander régulièrement. 

Rencontre notable: on montait les marches pour aller en haut d'un rocher pour voir Hoa Lu d'en haut quand Elfi a failli marcher sur un serpent vert. Il faisait environ 1,20m, il était tout fin avec des yeux noirs. On s'est arrêté pour prendre des photos puis on est chacun parti de notre côté. En rentrant à l'auberge on a demandé ce que ça pouvait bien être et la dame a eu l'air totalement horrifiée. Apparemment, si tu te fais mordre, tu as de grandes chances d'y passer. Rencontre avec un mamba vert: ça c'est fait!
