I thought that by visiting Unesco sites I would stay on the beaten track. Well, no! I am so glad I got help from Echo (the girl I met in Xiamen) to book the hotel, and also write down the direction for me. I would have never managed without her! My hostel was in Chikan, about 30min bus from Kaiping. I arrived there after nightfall and the bus dropped me at a cross road, near a bridge. The town was really dark, only few lamp post and I had to ask for direction. Thanks god I had them all written in Chinese. The hotel was very close. Good.

The next day I went to see the Diaolou . They were mostly build by successful overseas Chinese and incorporate architecture from China and the West. More basic diaolou were build in concrete with main propose to protect the villager form bandits. Here is a link to read more about it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaiping_Diaolou

There is 3 major diaolou clusters around Chikan. I went to all of them. It's easily feasible in one day even by foot/bus.

1) JinJiangLi village. I arrived there rather early and the village felt a bit like a ghost town. At least I could wander around undisturbed. I could even go up the Diaolou. It’s really cool to see inside and the view from there.

2) MaJiangLong village. It’s a group of villages with many diaolous. They have a suggested route for you to follow to see the main site. You cannot enter most of the diaolou and most of them don’t look that great. But one of them really stands out: the Lin family Diaolou. The inside is just untouched. It just seems like people were living here few month ago but all the furniture/pictures are from another century. It was amazing! This was my favourite of the day.

3) Zili village. Ok so here we have a winner. I am glad I went to the other two clusters first otherwise they would have seemed so dull. That cluster of Diaolou is the most scenic and the best kept . Also the most touristy. However the interiors are a bit less interesting than the one in the Lin Villa.

4) Li Garden. Nothing special. I think they tried to reproduced the garden in Suzhou but didn’t get any close.

5) Chikan. The town (where my hostel was) must have been gorgeous when all the building where new. They have cinema studios here and you can visit them so I had a quick look around.

Je pensais qu'en visitant les sites classés à l'Unesco je resterais plus ou moins sur les sentiers battus. Et bien c'est plutôt carrément moins! Je n'ai pu arriver jusqu'à Chikan que grâce à la gentillesse de Echo (la fille rencontrée à Xiamen) qui m'a aidé à réserver un hôtel et m'a écrit les directions sur un papier en chinois. Je suis arrivée à destination après la nuit tombée et le bus m'a déposée à un carrefour, près d'un pont. L'éclairage public était limité (voire inexistant) et j'étais bien contente de tout avoir écrit sur mon petit papier en chinois, j'ai pu demander ou était l'hôtel . Il était tout proche mais je ne pense pas que je l'aurais trouvé.Le lendemain, j'ai visité les Diaolou. Ils ont été le plus souvent construits par des chinois d'outre-mer et présentent une architecture à mi-chemin entre chinoise et européenne. Les diaolou les plus basiques ont été construits par les villageois pour se protéger des bandits. C"est carrément faisable de les visiter dans la journée même en étant à pied/bus. 1) Village de JinJiangli. J'y suis arrivée assez tôt et le village semblait désert. Au moins j'ai pu me balader sans encombre. On pouvait monter dans les diaolou alors je suis montée pour voir la vue et comment c'est à l'intérieur. 2) Village de MaJiangLong. C'est en fait un groupe de villages avec pas mal de diaolou. Ils ont un parcours fléché pour pouvoir voir tout le plus efficacement possible. Mieux vaut le suivre. La plupart des diaolou sont un peu décrépis et on ne peut pas y monter. Mais l'un d'eux est ouvert et vaut vraiment le coup. C'est le diaolou de la famille Lin. L'intérieur à juste l'air de dater de l'époque où il était habité. Ca transporte quelques décennies en arrière! Je m'y suis vraiment régalée. C'est mon préféré de tous.3) Village de Zili. Bon là on a un  gagnant. Je suis bien contente d'avoir visité les autres avant parce-que sinon ils m'auraient paru bien fades. Le groupe de diaolou de Zili est le mieux conservé et le plus joli. C'est aussi le plus touristique. Cependant, les intérieurs sont un peu moins intéressants, ça fait plus musée. 4) Le Jardin Li. RIen de spécial, si ce n'est que ce fut le lieu de tournage de certaines scènes du film 'Let the bullets fly'.
