Today, we thought we would take a drive to St Clair to check out the area. When we arrived, the main drag along the river was blocked off, so we decided to find out why. After we found a place to park and walked back to the river front, we found that there were several high speed boats parked on both sides of the street and vendors were getting set up to sell food and drinks. Come to find out they are going to have boat races on the river this weekend.
After being told we could not be on the street since we were not vendors, we got back in the car and drove north along the river toward through Port Huron and a few miles north. I thought we could find some places along the lakeshore where we would find neat harbors, coves, etc like we have found on our adventures to the east and west coasts and the Maritimes, but all we found were huge, expensive homes hogging the views of river and the lake or, what views there were, were of the industrial complexes across the river in Canada. Oh well, we needed to get our Wally World fix in, so we stopped there on the way back to the coach.
Saturday, we had seen signs that they were going to have a car show and their twice a week farmers' market in downtown Port Huron. So we drove into town and checked out the car show first. They blocked off six blocks in the heart of town for the show and had cars lined up on both sides of the main drag and one side street. There was a good mix of vehicles - some post 80's but a lot pre-'79. Most were muscle cars and many of them were Mopars. There were a few 5-6-7 Chevys (maybe six). The Hurst/Olds caught my eye as it was an excellent restoration.
After checking the cars out, we drove a short way across the canal to the farmers' market. Over the past few years we have been to a lot of them thanks to our traveling friends - the Lynch's - but this one was one of the few that was really a farmers' market in that, with the exception of a booth or two, vendors were selling fresh produce, plants, flowers or meat. We picked up a couple of things and then drove back across the canal to have lunch at the Vintage Tavern. The place is very cool with lots of dark wood and red brick, fireplaces, and neat bars. We opted to eat a la fresco on the second floor over looking toward the river and the marina. Shirley had their Mahi tacos and I ordered their turkey, bacon, and pepper jack panini. Good eats and a great place to sit and have a drink!
