Moving on to Mitchell

Mitchell, Queensland, Australia
5th June - to Neil Turner Weir Mitchell.
Regretfully we left Judds Lagoon this morning by about 8 .30am, which was quite early for us compared to lately. It was such a lovely spot, we would love to have stayed a few more days but we want to get to Charleville by Wednesday to meet Col and Liz on their way home to Charters Towers from SA, and we want a night or two at the river camp at Mitchell on the way.

We stopped in Roma for a brief look in the Information Centre, and a peek inside the tiny slab hut there, then found Roma's largest Bottle tree with a girth of 9.51 meters when last measured. It's meant to grow a centimetre a year depending on the season.

After some shopping- a new wheel for the kayak trolley, ( yes, this second hand kayak is starting to get more expensive) some groceries and something naughty for morning tea, we continued west.

On arrival at Mitchell we first checked Fishermen's Rest Camp on the Maranoa River but, as all the river side camps were taken, we went back to Neil Turner Weir and set up on the vast expanse of ground there before going into town, first to the quilt show at the library, and then a drink at one of the four pubs, and finally for a relaxing swim in the hot artesian water at the town pool.

Once back at camp we were invited to sit around the fire with the neighbours who have been travelling full time for 8 years! and two other couples from vans nearby. We had a good time and before we realised, it was 8pm, so we toddled off home to bed, without bothering with our pea and ham soup which we were going to heat up for tea. Makes tomorrow night's tea easy, doesn't it?
