We moved on to Wilcannia today, a town with some lovely old buildings made from local sandstone. In the 1890's Wilcannia was Australia's third largest inland port with a population of about 3000.
Before topping up with fuel at the daggiest fuel outlet I've ever seen, and we've seen a few in the middle of nowhere places, we did a little drive around the town to admire some of the architecture. Here's a bit of trivia: the Athenaeum, which I didn't take a photo of, had the youngest son of Charles Dickens on the original committee, and the Cricket Club had two of Charles Dickens sons and a son of Anthony Trollope as members.
For the night we stopped at a caravan park on a cattle and sheep property just out of town on the Darling River. We happily joined the obligatory 'happy hour ' at the huge campfire as the sun set. They even supplied cheese and crackers!
The showers at this park are enormous, just like an ensuite in a house. I was so impressed that I chose to use them rather than our own, while Rick cooked our marinated chicken for tea. Yum.Then we snuggled up with the air conditioner heater and the gas heater both going at once.
