I'm not big on twiddling my thumbs, hanging around, waiting for something to happen. As of yesterday, Entergy (the power company down here) had not yet set the poles or hooked up power to the last of our four houses. It is the future home of Mr. Chauvin Buras. He has been waiting patiently for his house to be completed and the power hookup is the last step before we can get final inspection from the Parrish and get our C. of O. and have him move in. I am the last one here living in the ghost town of our once bubbling-with-enthusiasm-volunteer camp at Port Sulphur Baptist Church, who has been hosting our groups since January of this year. It's funny the difference time makes. Anyway, rather than sit and wait, today I took a day trip up two hours north to Hammond, La. to work with the Ginger Ford Fuller Center. This organization is a merged Habitat/Fuller Center and is run by a young couple, Tamara and Dave. The house I worked on today is the first built since the merger. The future homeowner are Ginger and Bubba, their three (?) little girls 9 and under. Their two fathers-in-law, too, I believe will be living in the new home. the new home is being built on the property where their existing home is and where they are currently living. It is very small, with tarps still on the roof from Hurricane Gustav, which paid a visit in 2008.
Today, for volunteers, there was a small group of mosly young ladies from a local Presbyterian church
. Also their new interim pastor, Anne, whose husband was a city plannner for (small world) Plaquimines parrish. Ginger's brother in law, whose name for the life of me I couldnt and still do not remember, was a great help all day. We finsihed setting the tile in the kitchen area and in one of the three bathrooms. The group only worked until lunch (pizza- a classic). I told Tamara and Dave that I bet if I offered to come back on Monday and work a few days, that would make the power company show up. I'm gonna try it. Have a great weekend. BTW, kudos to the photographer for no plumber's crack pictures!

Wow. Think of all the echoes bouncing around that site.
There's always a certain sadness at endings.
Please say hello to Mr. Buris for Judy, Twila and me. He was a favorite of those two ladies, especially.
