Muncho Lake Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada
Muncho Lake
We are heading out and then pass over a suspension bridge: yes – it is the only suspension bridge on the Alaskan Highway. With some nice views on the Liard River. We also have some beautiful views on the surrounding mountains. And then Paul said what is that and we stop and there along the highway walks a Caribou, I don’t think it knows what it wants to do – it goes on the road and off the road – walk along side us on the road – it was a lot of fun to watch.
A bit further we stopped at the Muncho Lake viewpoint and yes now we are excited for a day on the lake.
And we get the last campsite
As we drive in, we already think that we are not lucky, as every side was full and then we come by one empty lake front, perfect view – we pull in, talk to our neighbor who only pulled in right before us and saw us at the hotsprings yesterday. We did walk then the rest of the campsite and yes we got the very last spot!!! Now isn’t that meant to be.
And here we have a lot of butterflies – they land on the truck and camper, they flirt around your feet (yesterday we even had one inside the camper and it was a big deal, that Paul could rescue it before Mandy caught it).
At the most beautiful Lake: Muncho Lake
  •  Muncho is Kaska language and means “big Lake”
  • The lake is 12 km long and one of the largest lakes in the Canadian Rockies
  • As it is a glacial lake, silt from the glacier come into the lake, most settles on the bottom and some are suspended in the lake giving it the milky appearance. The rock flour reflects and scatters sun rays and it appears blue-green
  • Some call it the most beautiful lake in the world (maybe not the world)
Out with the paddle board
Gine brings out the paddle board, also makes the dough for some cinnamon buns, Paul set up the chairs and Mandy’s playpen. Then we enjoy some nice coffee it is warm the sun is shining the lake is green – the view is amazing. Gine then sets out with the paddleboard on this beautiful green lake: off to the other side of the lake – along there into a little side cove and up around a tiny island – as the lake is so smooth the mountains mirror in the lake which is so gorgeous.
I may should mention that the lake is very cold – which is refreshing when its hot, and Paul was even so brave to actually go all the way in and under water!!
Enjoying the sunshine with the clouds
Back we have some coffee and sit outside in the sun (until the clouds came) – then it got a bit cool, it was a come and go for a while – but when it was out, it was amazing
As Gine’s window always sounds like it is on its last leg Paul took the door apart again to get it properly greased so that we have a noiseless smooth running window again.
After hair washing – yes with fresh lake water, then it is time for supper – which we eat outside with a setting sun. With the high mountains the sun is already gone at 7 pm – wow!!!! As it is still not cold we sit for a little while longer outside until we think there were too many little bugs and it gets a bit cool. But then even inside we have that amazing view!!!
And as we didn’t come by a store and were running out of pie and cookies – we got homemade cinnamon buns and chocolate buns.
A sunny lazy day at Muncho lake
What do you do when you wake up to sunshine on the lake – gorgeous views: you have coffee outside and decide that you finally need a day to relax and not move. And that is what we did – after coffee and breakfast we were heading to the lake: that means 10 m away from the camper.
And we discovered as soon as we get up, Mandy waits until she gets her leash on – no complaining at all, and if you take the short leash she is ready to go for a walk – guess we have her perfectly trained!!!
O ut for a paddle or out in the sun
The lake is super calm and all is mirroring in the lake – so Gine decides to paddle to the end of the lake – one hour there and one hour back – and always those super amazing views, this is one beautiful lake.
Paul decided is kind of fun is bringing out the mat and lie down and soak up some sunshine – or sit in his lazy chair and soak up some more sun.
The wind comes and the sun stays
The only break we have today is for coffee before we head back outside: Gine paddling on the lake with some waves and drifting back and Paul relaxing in the slight breeze
And at the end of the day we are so relaxed – that we are tired from all the sunshine. What is nice here, as soon as the sun goes it cools down, as the air is still cool here. And we checked the sun is gone behind the mountain shortly after 7 pm !!! But we can still look at the glowing mountains behind us.
And another morning of sunshine
Ok besides getting fly-bites – this is a wonderful spot and we got up to another beautiful sunny day on the lake shore. After cleaning the windows we set off: the drive along Muncho lake was super cool as we could see the super nice green color and the beautiful mountains – that is one scenic drive.
Strawberry Flats campground
We decided to pull into this campground and check it out – and we were surprised as there were a lot of sites available and I mean nearly all of them are on the lake too – not as open and sunny as on the other campground – but also beautiful.
