Last day

Benicasim, Valencian Country, Spain and Canary Islands
Sadly this would be our last day on site, so we awarded ourselves the time to do whatever we wanted. After a lazy morning packing things carefully inside the van, we went out to lunch with 4 friends at a very small restaurant in town. It was lovely – rough painted walls, plank benches to sit on with tables supported by barrels, and a menu of 3 courses for €6.95, including a wine or beer. Bargain!

Being a former primary school teacher, spell-checking is inbuilt in my psyche and I was very amused to see the menu translations: they were fine except for number 9, which read “beaf filet in nuts souce with scallion acompanied with grilled popes”! The Spanish for the last bit read “con papas”, so I think that as the word for the pope is Papa, someone had seen fit to translate it that way; my dictionary app however said it was a slang word for potatoes....much hilarity ensued (but Annette said it was all delicious).

It was a lovely occasion and we all thoroughly enjoyed it, then returned to the site to get ready for our final boules match. The pitches were at the far end of the site from our van, and by the time we’d walked up there it had started to rain. Blow it, I thought, I’m not worrying about a bit of water but we were getting pretty wet....Hubby had decided to take the umbrella with him, so he and his team mates played from underneath, staying dry all the way; the age of chivalry is truly dead.

Dave & Nina had very kindly invited us for tea with much accompanying wine for our last evening – not a problem as we had to walk the whole 3 yards back home!
