Valencia Water tasting

Benicasim, Valencian Country, Spain and Canary Islands
A poster had gone up at reception advertising "Valencia Water" tasting after lunch today; there was some discussion about how water tasting would make an interesting activity, but then we spotted that the clip art with the text seemed to be a jug of orange juice. Aha, we thought – Valencia is famous for oranges so maybe its orange water.....and we would give it a go later.

We decided to visit Benicassim market this morning, so off we cycled. It seemed that everyone else had had the same idea, as there were scores of bikes parked near the entrance, so we joined them. Thankfully it wasn't a touristy market at all, more one for the residents & we enjoyed strolling round the stalls; bizarrely there seemed to be an inordinate number selling bras......no idea why.

On the way back we called in at Cafe Ebissa (the one by the church that gives you a cheese & ham toastie every time you sit down), sat outside and were joined by 2 more sets of friends. After a drink & a nice chat we realised it was time for the tasting session, so we quickly mounted our bikes and shot back to the site.

We were correct in our thinking – and completely wrong! Sofia made a jug of Valencia Water using the following recipe:

1.      Put ice in your jug

2.      Add half a jug of cava (Oh, this is more like it)

3.      Also add one third of a jug of orange juice (yes, we guessed it correctly J)

4.      Now add 6 seconds of vodka (WHAT??) ie. Pour while you count to 6 (getting better all the time)

5.      Also add 6 slow seconds of gin (oh yes, this is my kind of drink!!!!)

6.      Serve and enjoy (Definitely)

I had taken 2 sips when I suddenly realised I didn’t have my bag – containing cash, my credit cards and both our passports.....complete panic ensued when I worked out I had last had it in the cafe before lunch. I shot back into town on my bike, heart racing & blood pressure probably through the roof, hoping against hope that someone had handed it in intact, but when I arrived I was completely thrown – for there it was, on the floor by my chair!

I cannot describe the relief I felt – the passports were the most precious, as one can live without money or credit cards (though it would be very inconvenient, if not expensive) but a passport.....anyway, everything was there, so we cycled back at a slightly more leisurely pace – and REALLY enjoyed the rest of the Valencia Water!
