Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Saw the ferry terminal sign at the Km 9.5 mark and off I got. Actually there were 3 places along this road where you can catch the ferry (only found out later). Never mind as I had all day to fill in and was told that the next ferry leaves in just under an hour at 12 noon. So sat back in the sea breeze, warm sun and enjoyed the views of the turquoise blue sea.

I made the decision that while catching the ferry from any of the 3 terminals ($17 US or 280 pesos) in the hotel zone cost twice that of getting on at Puerto Juarez (140 pesos) I didn’t want the hassle of busing all the way back to Puerto Juarez.

Then to my surprise Rio turned up as he also had done the same thing as me but on a later bus. Chances of this happening ie us meeting are slim.

Then at 11.30 am were informed that the ferry would be leaving from another terminal 3 kms away at Playa Tortugas so all of the passengers boarded the next R1 bus and driven the five minutes along the road where we caught the 12 noon ferry over to Isla Mujeres. While waiting for the 15 minutes saw several people bungy jump.

A busker had commandeered us all for the 15 minute trip over. We had no choice but endure his performance. He was bad! (This happened on the way back ... a different busker).

Rio wanted to go snorkelling at the southern end of the island so we parted ways. I wandered through the town and ended up at North Beach and to my surprise there was Kristian, Jeff, Lisa and Jason. Again the chances of this happening are remote. Apparently Caroline and Wei were only 200 metres along the beach.

Wandered to the end of the beach and returned. Spent the rest of the time with them. Didn’t plan on swimming so couldn’t! The water did look inviting.

Then surprise Rio turned up. Again what is the probability of this happening? He had hitched hike from the southern end to the northern beach not knowing who was where.

Lunch at Tarzan was a Hawaiian burger and a pineapple juice. Why not? It felt like Hawaii!

The 3.30 pm ferry back to Puerto Juarez took 15 or so minutes. Even I had a return ticket to Playa Tortugas, I told the ticket collector that I wanted to go to Puerto Juarez. So that meant I visited 3 ferry terminals and saw much more of the hotel zone than I had expected.

No buses were outside and with the road works did not know where the rerouted bus would have gone. Someone said follow that road so off I went. Having my map in my phone I knew exactly where I was and which 2 roads to take: Av Jose Lopez Portillo and left into Av Tulum. It took less than an hour to walk back to the hotel. The other 5 crammed into one taxi.

My reflection is Cancun is a world of two halfs. The morning and afternoon saw how the tourists lived and relaxed but here in Cancun central saw how the locals worked, shopped and were transported around by the local much poorer conditions buses and smaller collective vans along roads that needed much repair work.

Group meeting at 6 pm then off to El Crustaceo Cascarudo for a Filette de pescado zarandeado - 110 peso / NZ $ 10.30 / US $ 8.50.
