"GO SLOW” Caye Caukler to San Ignacio

San Ignacio, Cayo, Belize
A lazy relocate day.

Up at 6 am and hopefully after last night's disaster with the sunset will I get a decent sunrise from the 4th floor roof top deck. No such luck. Too much cloud cover but at least it gave me a bird’s view of the sleepy Caye Caukler houses.

With an 11 am check out from our lovely cool air conditioned rooms, it meant a short wait at the end of the wharf with that lovely gentle sea breeze till our 12 noon ferry left the rather peaceful and relaxing “GO SLOW” Caye Caulker before heading back to the mainland. It was a fast 45 minute trip. Love to know how fast we were speeding across the flat Caribbean Sea towards Belize City.

Into taxis and on arrival at the bus terminal had no time except to get straight onto my second “chicken” bus trip which left at 1.30 pm bound for San Ignacio. I headed towards the back and chose an isle seat hoping that this would be better for my long legs. Yes it was! The 2 ½ hour trip went without incident. Click, click rather blindly out of the high open ex school bus window so do excuse the rather poor composition but at least it will give you a wee peep into the green countryside that we passed through. We passed plenty of different protestant churches and church schools plus several Mennonite men boarded. A spot of brief rain did not hinder the view. Plus it was really cool.

Arrived at San Ignacio referred to as "Cayo" by the locals at 4 pm. San Ignacio is an agricultural centre and is fast becoming known as the 'adventure' and 'nature' capital of Belize.

After paying for tomorrow‘s activity ATM US $ 85 plus iguanas US $ 15 = US $ 100 / NZ $ 120, got to the hotel at 5 pm where we had to pre-order our dinner and next morning‘s breakfast. With such a large group, this was the best way for the kitchen to cope!

The day’s dinner special was BBQUE ribs for 25 BZ / NZ $ 15.30 / US $ 12.60. So on Bec’s recommendation decision made. Again right on the button ... meat just fell off and tasty!

San Ignacio is a town in western Belize that serves as the capital of Cayo District. It got its start from Mahogany and chicle production during British rule. It began to attract different people from the surrounding areas, which led to the diverse population of the town at present day.

The town was originally named El Cayo by the Spanish. On October 19, 1904, El Cayo was officially declared a town by the government of British Honduras.

San Ignacio is situated on the banks of the Macal and Mopan Rivers, about 68.5 miles / 115 kilometres west of Belize City and 22 miles 35 km / 22 miles west of the country's capital, Belmopan.

The population is largely Mestizo and Kriol, with some Lebanese and Mopan. San Ignacio also boasts a fairly large Chinese population, most of whom emigrated from Guangzhou in waves in the mid-20th century. A sizable Mennonite community resides near San Ignacio. Thanks Mr Wikipedia.

Hey Bruce The sunset pictures are glorious! And is the Police Station on a lean?

Good to hear that you are having some down time. Living in Invercargill for the last 11 years I have forgotten how many people are in the rest of the world, I find the busyness pretty scary.
