I heard much about the natural wetland of Oroklini, which is located about 10km from the city of Larnaca . I am told that despite its small size it is home to rich wildlife, so I got excited hearing a friend describing the scene with the birds every time she takes the dog out for a walk.



WETLAND (?)

The lake is designated as a Special Protection Area mainly for two nesting species, so I am pleased hearing a friend and neighbor, Aphrodite, offering to drive me out there.

Of course I expect to see a wetland, but to my disappointment the spot was totally dry. Being a bit patient though we were awarded in the end.



 
WATCHTOWER

We both climbed up the observatory wooden watchtower, made ourselves comfortable and waited for the birds to show up. The sun had already set behind Stavrovouni but at the other end, across and over the sea the sky's palette of colors was breathtaking . The horizon had a pinkish glow, and then suddenly we noticed the first birds coming in groups and making rounds above our heads first before landing on some bushes in the supposed to be wetland in the distance. I had to zoom to see them clearly but at least we weren't totally disappointed.Next time I am probably luckier but still, I cannot complain can I?



 
A TREAT

To thank my friend I suggest we get to Larnaca for some beer. I ask for one at first but she prefers a club sandwich and some coffee instead. If I have coffee I will stay awake the whole night, so I ask for a second glass to assure that I will get a good night’s sleep. The treat is on her as she insists that she wants to pay.
