Fine and sunny, 16-27deg, (feels like 31) 39 km, av. 15.4km/h (tot 623km).
A 2 .7km ride saw us out of Sw (for good this trip) and into France via an unmanned border post. This is also the last time we'll see Germany, albeit from across the Rhine. We'll miss the German/Swiss efficiency but we won't miss the Swiss cost of living or the need to juggle two currencies. I've read that one in eight Swiss are worth a million Francs. I reckon they need every one of them to be able to afford to live in this great country. It's Euro all the way to Amsterdam now. We'll also miss our little apartment in Basel where we enjoyed some nice home cooked meals for a change.
Apart from the first 5km, the day was spent riding along the top of the banks of canals. Saw some very smart looking canal houseboats which would fit nicely parked on our river back home. About 10km was on smooth gravel the rest on good bitumen. Also had a tailwind most of the morning so it was a real bludge. We were settled into our city central motel, run by the same lady (complete with little dog) who was running the show when Greg & Graham stayed there in 2012.
The local authorities have achieved a great deal in the last two years. The city is cleaner and smarter looking, with a lot of the restoration and roadworks we saw in progress then now completed. Spent a relaxing afternoon wandering through the narrow streets or along the canal.
