As I hike through the peaceful fields, with wooded hills on the horizon dotted with little villages, I do start to get a feel for what a "trans-Germany" hike will feel like. Will I make lots of detour to visit towns several kilometers away? Probably not.

And even though it's only been a couple of hours, I'm disappointed with myself when I get the feeling of "sameness" when I reach Eching. Same architecture. Same feel. Not very photogenic or memorable. I'm surprised that the excitement of exploring Germany could fade so quickly.

I realize that hiking across Europe will involve many towns like this, where I will feel challenged to try to see something "new" and fresh about a town. But I realize that's OK. It's still part of immersing myself in this continent and experiencing all its aspects. It's all part of thoroughly experiencing this beautiful continent.

I head back to the train station, where I wait, alongside a group of South Asian immigrants, as my train approaches, and my brief glimpse of Germany comes to an end...
