Would you live here?

Tonalá, Jalisco, Mexico
I usually get up around sunup, which has been 7:30. Shops don't generally open until 9:00. I get out and start walking around at about 8:30. It's been overcast in the morning for about three hours, and usually with a light sprinkle at some point for about 15 min. As I mentioned, it's been in the low 60s to start out, warming to around 80 and not very humid. But you walk around for a couple of hours and you're going to sweat some. So I come back to my room for a break or sit in a restaurant for a little while. I figure there are about 11 mi. of streets in this area, and in a day I probably walk about 20 mi. (hasn't trimmed my waistline any, though). Around 5:00 in the afternoon, there's usually a light sprinkle, but it's come down hard enough twice to chase me under cover. Thankfully, it was dinner time; and the sun was out when I finished. At around 9-10 PM, it has rained hard for up to an hour; but I'm in my room by this time.

I took some pics of some of the houses that stood out in these neighborhoods. No idea what the values are.

Nice homes like these stand side by side with hovels, eateries, manufacturing, and other businesses.

I think maybe the owners of these homes also own a local business and want to stay close.

They all have garages, or at least a secure space for their vehicles; whereas the poorer people might have less than a four foot front.

The reason for the small frontage is that it's right next to a small shop, like a boot shop. The shop might be 12 ft x 12 ft; the home next door would have a 3 ft x12 ft hallway and then open into a 16 ft wide area (no idea how deep they go). These doorways, for the most part, are not ornate, but a peek into one of these open doors sometimes reveals some pretty nice interiors.

Not many woodworking shops in this area, but the few I saw made either ornate things, or just serviceable plain stuff. No in between.

I tried to take some shots of Guadalajara (seems Tonala is higher than some of the surrounding area), but it's really difficult to get a proper perspective (of, say, the size of something), because you can't see, in a pic, all that surrounds it. No point of reference, especially if you're not familiar with the area. Take a picture of an eastern pine tree, then take a picture of a redwood; they probably won't look much different, unless you put a person in front each one.

Lunch was Chuleta (sorry forgot to take a pic); they served a noodle soup (thought that's all I was getting), followed by breaded fish with rice. Cost: under $4.

Dinner was 2 quesadillas and a Fanta. Cost: under $3.
