Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
today we set off on a 6 hour minibus journey to Jaipur but not before stopping off at India gate,a vast memorial arch for the soldiers of the imperial army that fell in the first world and third afghan wars. The drive took us through fertile plains until we started a slow climb into Rajasthan. Occasional large rocky outcrops appeared in the mist, the fields became smaller and there were more wooded areas including palm trees. We started seeing monkeys again gathered near the fruit sellers by the side of the road.We also passed carvers and masons plying their trade too turning out Hindu gods and the such like. Camels were being used to pull carts laden with goods too.Eventually we reached the outskirts of Jaipur and got held up by a wedding party in the street so we parked up and some of us joined in with the dancing. After some lunch we set off to explore the famous pink city itself. A colonnade of stalls either side of the street was fun to explore and we climbed up on the roof of a temple to get a good view of the city and it was a shame that the road was up to build a metro. We left the old city and went and had a lassi before visiting the famous local cinema for the real Bollywood experience. The crowd cheered as their favourite actors appeared on screen and small children ran about everywhere. To finish the day in true Indian style we took tuktuks home passing a couple of weddings on the way and one procession passed our hotel with the groom atop an elephant.
