The Amber Fort

Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
This morning we drove into old Jaipur to look at the Palace of Winds,it is just a facade now but originally it was where the ladies in court could look down on the street and see what was going on without be seen and it was also built at an angle of 85* to prevent people looking in. A quarter of an hour later we arrived at the Amber Fort, the old capital before it was moved down in the valley in 1760's. We were blessed by a baby elephant and entertained by a snake charmer.A few hundred steps avoiding the elephants taking people up and we were in the fortress complex. Ornate pavilions,a jacuzzi and a snippet from the Kama sutra were some of the highlights. On the way back into town we stopped to admire the palace on the lake where a former beggar child entertained us with magic tricks that helped him back on the straight and narrow. A good lunch with a beer revived us before we explored the City Palace back in Jaipur. Until recently it was the home of the local maharajah and contained all sorts of memorabilia including his polo and billiard clothes. The palace complex was similar to the former one up in the hills but less ornate but still had the worlds largest silver objects that a former maharajah used to take water from the Ganges to Edward the 7th's coronation. We took a tuktuk back to the hotel after griping with a couple of drivers who wanted to charge us 4 times the advised price. Another driver agreed a much lower price much to the annoyance of the others who reduced their price as we walked away.It was a bit cramped with 4 of us but we careered along in the rush hour traffic quite happily. We then had another meal in town, this time a South Indian speciality,a thali. Very full we tumbled into bed for another early start at 6.30am.
