Another day in Delhi

Delhi, National Capital Territory of, India
This morning we ventured once more onto the metro to get to the Red Fort that was shut when we were last in Delhi. Built by the Moguls it is a vast red sandstone walled citadel with wonderful white marbled pavilions inside gardens and some later brick barracks built by the British that have only recently been left by the Indian army. they look quite sad but the whole complex is being renovated. We had arranged to meet Sangeeta,a cousin of our friend Anjali in Mauritius and she took us to a lovely old Indian sweet shop in the huge market in old Delhi, then we walked through to the spice market and then decided to take a rickshaw to the other side of the market for a late lunch but traffic immediately ground to a halt. This is in an area without cars just rickshaws, bicycle deliveries, motor scooters and hand held trolleys for moving goods from the wholesalers to the outlying markets. There were also 3 political marches too for the big local elections on Saturday. Eventually we arrived at the curry house and had a delicious meal.We took another rickshaw to the local metro but this time we had no problems. It is a bit daunting using the metro as you are body searched each time, male and females in different lines with bags checked like in airports. When we changed trains at Connaught place we had to queue to get on the train about 30 deep.there is a man on duty at the edge to ensure the doors close and we got on on the third train.the trains are about once a minute so it's no big deal but quite frightening as everyone tries to pile on. Thankfully the train starts to empty at the next stop and ours was only 3 stops more. we thought we'd have a beer at the bar round the corner but were told it's closed by order of the government, probably due to the upcoming election on Saturday. That was a bit of a disappointment but worse was to follow as just after we got into our room there was a knock on the door and we had a deputation with our laundry because a pair of Sebastian's trousers had been burnt badly during ironing. They were most apologetic and now we have to find a trekking shop where we might find a specialist pair of lightweight and uv light resistant trousers.Seems a good way to spend a day tomorrow!
