Taking it easy in Waikiki

Waikiki, Hawaii, United States
Wednesday 24 July 2013 has arrived so quickly we are packed ready to become the Grey Nomad Gypsies leaving our footprints across Canada.

Flight QF580 from Perth to Sydney was delayed due to late arrival and cleaning of plane. When ever Richard notices infants and says "I hope they don't sit near us", they do and we have crying kids on take off and landing. Our seats 52E and F were in the back middle section of the plane worst luck. The flight was good food average as plane food always is. The four or so hour flight went quick.

Once we arrived in Sydney we had to race to Gate 15 to catch the shuttle to the International Airport go through Customs (I of course always have the body search in the new xray machine. Must have a guilty face as Richard says. My bows and sequins sent the machine off how strange. As we only had 15 minutes to board the plane (QF3) I raced ahead through Duty Free to TRS to claim my GST back from buying this lovely Toshiba Satellite Laptop which is driving me in sane (Windows 8 and Microsoft 2013). I had to turn the laptop on for the chap to see I had everything I was claiming for.

Well we just made it for the plane and thank god we weren't one of the three people who were holding up the plane. Guest what Richard mentioned infants again and we had about ten around us and again we were in the back middle section seats 45E and F. This was an old plane so every seat had a Ipad to view movies, TV or what ever you wanted on the Qantas screen I have fun trying to work out the Ipad. Richard of course is okay seeing he has his work Ipad. You could still watch the small screens above in the isle. Somehow we managed to get some sleep in the fourteen or so hour flight.

Customs at Honolulu was quick no problems. Suitcase came off quick for a change caught a shuttle to Outrigger Luana Waikiki Hotel where we are staying for three nights. We weren''t to impressed when we arrived at 11am to be told our self contained unit wouldn't be ready till 3pm. Nothing like being tired and wanting a shower and change of clothes. Was a waste of time when I booked stating we required a unit early.

As we know our way around we went to the ATM at Bank of Hawaii to get $100 out from our Cashpassport MasterCard only to be wacked with a $2.75 fee. One lesson not to be repeated next time when be buy anything we get cash out.

Took a stroll across Fort DeRussy Park to the beach saw all the familiar sights from when we were here in 2011.

Walked over the ABC store and bought a four day bus pass (how to spend $60 very quickly). Caught the yellow bus to the Ala Moana Shopping Centre the world's largest open-air shopping centre with over 290 stores and restaurants. Had a Yum Cha lunch at our usual restaurant and their lovely custard tarts. Walked around checked out the usual shoe shops for joggers as I need new ones for Canada. Bought some new Croc sandals $31.33 if I bought them in Perth they are over $50 - $60 what a saving.   Checked out Foodlands and bought our food supply for our four day stay. Food isn't really cheap here about the same price as Perth.

Rested our feet at Island Vintage Coffee for a Latte. They make a lovely coffee there always go back there for our Lattes. The lady's chest puffed up when I told her we go back there every time we come to Waikiki.

Arrived back to our hotel at 3pm and thankfully our unit was ready on the eighth floor R814 overlooking Fort DeRussy Park with part ocean views. It was lovely to unpack, have a shower and change of clothes. Had fun working out the microwave somehow the veges got cooked. Thank god the chicken was already cooked, dinner was lovely with our Macadamia cream custard pie.

Watched the fireworks display from our balcony before retiring to bed and watching TV.

The bed was soft we just died and didn't wake till after 8am. Somehow the microwave cooked the scramble eggs, which went great with the toasted soughdough and fruit.

Being nice and refreashed we explored the hotel, nice pool (forgot the bathers), don't think we will get in the Gym or use the BBQ area.

We are experts with the buses. Thought we would explore Ala Moana Park and public beach today took a video of the beaches, surfers and boat harbour. Managed to get people to take photos of Richard and myself. A lot of people were having picnics (school holidays) boy can they eat. It is sad to see a lot of homeless people living in the park.

Ventured back to Ala Moana Shopping Centre to Walmart for Richard to buy some bathers, slipons, odds and sods. I bought my video memory sticks for my Sony Video seeing you cannot get them in Perth. My camera is now classed as out of date. Sketchers had our joggers at a good price another thing that is expensive in Perth. We have gone in a feeding frenze for shoes.

Usual Yum Cha lunch and coffees also a lot of people watching there are a few fruit cakes that kept us intertained, also the daily hula show. The day has just run away from us it is 6pm and time for dinner hopefully the microwave will be nice to me. Watched the fireworks at the beach again from our balcony before venturing to bed.
