Exploring Tofino

Tofino, British Columbia, Canada
Enjoyed a cup of coffee by the foreshore what we could see as the sea mist had set in. The sea mist was very thick as we started our drive to Tofino hope it lifts so we can enjoy the scenery. Ucluelet is at one end of the peninsular and Tofino is at the other and is a little town that swells with tourist. In the summer the surfers come to Long Beach a 16 mile stretch of surfing beach including Green Point, Combers Beach and Wickaninnish Beach meant to be the best in Canada. On the other side of Long Beach is Schooners Cove. There is kayaking, fishing, whale watching, hot springs soaking, other people come to do the hiking trails through the ancient rain forests, spot bald eagles and black bears (which we haven't seen yet. In winter there is storm watching which would be great to see off the rugged coastline.

Parked downtown in Tofino to walk around the town plus take some videos. Followed the tourist Map to Government Dock and watched the float planes take off and land plus a boat came in with an injured person who was transferred to an awaiting ambulance on the dock. The town hasn't been spoiled by fast food chains there are only the local shops which are lovely and very quaint. Had a lovely hot chocolate before driving to Crab Dock Tofino is another harbour town and here we saw all the fishing boats, a little houseboat and all the other docks.

Starting to get a bit peckish drove back out on the only road through the Pacific Rim National Park took a left turn to Grice Bay and watched a group of people coming back from a kayaking three day holiday in the wilderness. The bay is so beautiful and peacefully one could stay here for ever and a day surrounded by the forest next to the water.

Took the next right turn to Long Beach to have our lunch . No surf today but the people kept us entertained   and we took a little walk the rocky edge which I climbed to take a photo of Schooners Cove next beach to Long Beach.    We were going to go to Radar Hill for a view over the land to the ocean but the trees now block the view plus the mist has come back in. Seeing we could see all the other beaches from Long Beach we thought we would drive up a bit further to Wickaninnish Beach and walk the South Beach Trail (2kms) round the rugged coast to South Beach. This pebble beach is famous for the music of stones rolling in the surf and the dramatic high waves.

When we pulled up in the car parking I noticed a ticket machine and apparently you buy a day ticket to park you car at all the beaches etc that are on the Pacific Rim National Park, which we hadn't done. You incur a very hefty fine if the Ranger spots your car without a ticket well we didn't know and visited all these beaches not knowing. Well we ducked down to the beach front and the mist was so thick paying $13.00 for a couple of hours walking in the mist was a bit expensive plus I don't think we would see anything. Looking at the Tourist Map the scene looked just the same as the rugged coastline at Ucluelet where we had been yesterday hiking.

Back at the cabin we logged into the WIFI at the Owners front door as this is where the strongest reception is but when we tried at our cabin there was not reception. I had to go back to the Owners front porch to login to download my emails and check messages. Email from Darryl with directions to meet him at Buckley Bay Ferry Terminal at 12.30pm tomorrow. Spoke with him and all is arranged.

It was freezing cold while I was talking to Terry on Skype letting him know we were driving up tomorrow to stay with them, then a surprise I had John and Phyllis also trying to Skype me. Had a lovely long chat with Phyllis and young John scanned all the accounts I needed to check and pay.

Time was marching on and seeing it was our last day at the cabin we had to nick into Ucluelet to the Launndromat to do our washing. Long and boring wait went into the Co Op Store bought a muffin to eat while the washing was on. The chap next door at Murrays Lucky Dollar was very strange had to go there for change for the Dryer 25cents (quarter) for three minutes of drying. You find very weird people in Laundromat's.

Late quick BBQ cooked all the pork used some for our sandwiches tomorrow and off to bed for a early start tomorrow.   Didn't want to miss Darryl at Buckley Bay it is about a three hour drive there.
