Since my last visit in 2007 Sarajevo has added a cable car up to the mountains where they hosted the 1984 Winter Olympics. It was raining so I had to change my plans around.
Originally today I was to do a day trip to Tesanj to see the fortress but the tour company said they had no other bookings. The bus option was very slow and would be an overnight trip. The other tour options to Tito's Bunker in Konjic, or Medieval Bosnia at Kraljeva Sutjeska also did not have bookings. The final option to rent a bike was not worth it due to the rain, hilly city, and they wanted 30 Euros for the bike rental.
Since my return from Jajce I had an annoying neighbour in the other guest house apartment that started speakerphone zoom calls from 7am waking me up.
I left by 11am hoping for the rain to pass. The cable car is a walk up from city hall. It appears close to my apartment but the roads wind so much the only way to get there is from city hall
Ticket was 30 BM (15 EU) and I had the car to myself. I had scouted it out yesterday and it was quite busy later in the day. Sunday morning and rain it was deserted.
The hills were also used to shell the city and City Hall directly visible in the 1990s war. At the top I had to figure out where the Olympic Bobsled track was. There were maps and some signage
There are various hiking trails so you could spend the day but I just wanted to get to the Bobsled track
The track is several kms long. There are many branch lines so I tried to stay on the main line
It is now public art as the whole track has been covered in graffiti. There is also moss so with the rain it can be a bit slippery
Sprawling in all directions like a giant octopus it was on a down incline so I would have to walk all this way back up on an incline
There were some snow flurries at this high altitude and I made my way back alone on the empty cable cars
Back in the apartment the noisy neighbour had his shoes outside his door and seemed to be teaching an online psychology class. At first I thought he was just a gossip until these classes seemed to go on
The apartment had a washing machine so I did a weeks worth laundry thought the soap powder was mostly finished. Good idea to pack soap powder packets for future trips.
