I woke at 7am in my Trebinje apartment to the sound of roosters and dogs barking. It felt more like staying in the country than a medium sized town.
I made my way to the bus station for the 10am bus to Mostar having had some time to rest. The owners saw me off when I paid and it was a pleasant "home stay" though my apartment was separate from the family
The lady at the desk was smoking, not something we would see in other countries. The ticket was 20BM (10EU) but she would only take payment in Bosnian Marks.
As an obviously foreign passenger the driver got nervous as well as perhaps his English is weak as I was early and one of the first bus passengers.
We leave on a long mountain curved road overlooking Trebinje. I could make out the hilltop church and the old Turkish Bridge though they wont come out clear in photos.
Checking the route online beforehand we would mostly be driving thru the Republic Srpska the autonomous Serbian region of Bosnia as part of the 1995 peace treaty.
It was mostly countryside and a few small towns. I dont think I saw any Mosques in this region except maybe a couple.
An interesting stop was the town of Gacko. This was obviously a Serbian town with its large church prominent in the town centre by the bus station
On approach to Mostar was a large hilltop fortress I had forgotten about and thought about visiting in my 2007 visit.
This was my third time in Mostar and first time back since 2007. We drove along Marsala Tita the main street which had many war damaged buildings with bullet holes.
It was like this in my first two visits in 2006 & 2007 only a decade after the 1992-95 wars. But I was coming back 17 years later from 2007 so was surprised this many buildings have still not been restored.
At the bus station were gypsies so I kept my distance remembering the pickpocket I met in Barcelona in 2009.
The guest house had provided photos to let me know the location and how to self check in since my phone SIM was not working in Bosnia and I would not have wifi until I was in the apartment.
It was close to the bus station, spacious for two nites, and only 30 Euros/nite
