Non-Travel Day

Today we retraced part of our previous days trip by going north on US Hwy 191, and then west on Utah Hwy 95, part of “Utah’s Bicentennial Scenic Highway” but we continued west past the Natural Bridges National Monument into the White Canyon . Here the scenery turned from relatively flat land of the mesa to beautiful vistas of rock formations as far as the eye can see, canyons and dry riverbeds. We entered the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and headed to an area designated as a boat ramp onto Lake Powell, for a view of the lake and a picnic lunch. We were both surprised to see a boat ramp that ended on dry land and “floating docks” that were sitting on dry land. The Colorado River that feeds Lake Powell was flowing strongly but was a good distance from the ramp and docks; apparently the water level in the lake is down considerably causing this dry condition on the upper reaches of the lake. It was still a magnificent view. After lunch we continued west on the highway crossing the Colorado River and stopping at several overlooks to enjoy the grandeur of the river and the surrounding canyons. After traveling about 120 miles from camp we decided to turn around and head home; even though we were returning on the same road the views were completely different and we thoroughly enjoyed the drive.
