Mad max meets flint stones

Coober Pedy, South Australia, Australia
Not the most exciting ride we have been on, passed a few salt flats. At least the sun was out for while at least and was a lot warmer than previous days.
300 miles of outback bush with only the odd emu, flies and road trains for company. I thought there should be skippies every where.

For a pit stop we detour off the StuartHwy to Woomera previously HQ for British nuclear rocket testing. Caused at lot of problems for the original local population. Now it is a bit empty and feels like a ghost town. It is still a defence site but the only thing we could see where rockets and planes you could have a look round.

We decide to stay at Cooper Pedy is a strange little place half the town is built underground to avoid the heat the rest surrounded by red stone and dust. As far as the eye can see there are small white mounds every where. Then we see the signs do not go off the track and a symbol showing following in a large hole.
These are obviously the results of noodleing or digging for Opels the main economy of the town

Our hotel is on edge of town build into the hill side our room is 20m into the cliff very odd. Not the warmest of welcomes looked like they were still building. Buckets and tools everywhere. No restaurant so means going into town which is a hike.

Walk in the dark is interesting as we are unsure of the way and we are on a dirt road. Made it to town it is again empty tumble weed will be blowing across in front of us next, beginning to wonder if there is a reason for this. At first look there is nothing open but we eventually find the underground restaurant. Very brightly lit room carved into the stone not quite the same as the pictures.

Tom - its amazing but in every roadhouse, resturaunt or hotel we meet an english girl serving behind the bar or waiting on, it seems the girls are far more adventurous than the boys these days about getting out and seeing the world.
