Cunnamulla, Queensland, Australia
Charleville to Cunnamulla, a smooth drove on the blacktop of just over two hours. A call into the info centre for our supply of brochures and ideas and out 4klm to the Warrego River Park. There are not really any good free camps, in fact there really are none easily accessible to travellers. Didn't matter as the Warrego was one of the best. Each site had plenty of grass and the amenities first class.

Once settled we spent the afternoon at the museum, art gallery, a walk around town and an ale at a newly renovated boutique hotel. Our mate Buzz Cowie was born out here, but at first it seemed only the police had heard about him :-). Actually his twin sister, Del and husband Bob own the Cunnamulla Hotel so we had to drop by of course.

Back at the campsite, John, one of the owners has a big firepit on the banks of the Warrego and holds forth at a Happy 2-3 Hours each evening.

There was another aspect of our first night at camp, it is Nick's 29th Birthday and we had arranged with a number of people to look to the Southern Cross at 8pm and raise a glass to our boy. By this time we had the campfire to ourselves and at 8pm we drank to Nick. Over the next 20 minutes we had messages from friends and family on the Gold Coast, port Macquarie, Canberra, Austria, England and Italy that they had done the same. Tom rang us and he and Ash were at Jonno & Di Mousers with many friends and they lit candles around a tree we had planted for Nick. Thank you everyone, it was a very, very special thing for us!

We had met a couple in Charleville, Meredith and Peter from Adelaide and they joined us on our second day in Cunnamulla. We all had a day out at Eulo and hit the mud baths. Back in Cunnamulla we joined "John's Friday Nite Special" around his firepit with about 20 people. John runs the dodgiest raffle in the outback, but it is aid of the RFDS so we were in, not winning as expected. After that event the four of us took shovels of coals from his Gidgee fire and put it under the BBQ plate for a great night under the stars full of food, wine and tales (some true).
