In Search of Nick II

Diamentina, Queensland, Australia

The road to Davenport Station from Boulia is 230klm of gravel through some spectacular countryside, and passes through the Diamentina National Park. About 22klm into the National Park we found the site where Nick's accident occurred and his life ended.

There is not much to say. The country is flat and featureless. The accident took place just after a long straight and a rutted corner. We don't as yet have the police report as to their understanding of why.

It was emotional being there. We spent about an hour and searched for some larger rocks to build a small marker about 10 metres off the road. Someone had made a rough circle around where Nick was found, and Roscoe used small black gravel to write Nick's name. This will only last a little time.

Not far from Nick there is a campsite on a large waterhole called Gum Hole. The site will make for a great camp spot when we return with Tom and Ash next year.

On to Davenport!
