Bedourie, Queensland, Australia
Davenport Downs to Bedourie is about 260klm of gazetted gravel road, easy no? No! The first 70klm, almost dead straight, is still within Davenport Downs and initially it does twist and turn for the first 6klm thru the Diamentina Channels. Then it is straight and very good road and we sat on about 70kph. We were guided by Hema Maps iPad edition, the best set of maps you can buy for outback adventure! After 45klm we came to a very good and well used fork in the road, still, Hema said straight ahead so we did. Over the next -20klm our road became less well maintained, less used and at a gate it disappeared. Not to be daunted, as the maps clearly showed a junction about 2klm further, we pushed a path thru some low brush and thru a small creek (Lotus Inn in tow). After 800 metres we rediscovered the road which went straight thru a new fence....without a gate. Yep, back we went.

The road to Bedourie went thru Monkira station with some spectacular red sand dunes and ridges with brilliant white cliffs . From Monkira it is about 145klm on the Diamentina Developmental road to Bedourie, a very small town with a very warm welcome to travellers....free access to the town hot thermal spa and swimming pool when you stay at a council park for the princely sum of $5 per person! So, a long day on the road (5 hours), a spa and over the road for a cool sundown rumbo at the Bedourie pub.
