The sprawling metropolis of Eulo, population 18, lies 64klm west of Cunnamulla. We opted for a day trip and a self-guided town tour. We were back in familiar territory as Roscoe and his dad, Dick, came to Eulo the first time in 1978 to try to buy the pub. Upon arrival at about 2pm there was not a person to be seem in the pub, or the main street, but the Eulo Queen was open for business. They sat at the bar and waited, then called out, had a look outside, but nobody home. Roscoe poured a beer each and sat to wait. After the second beer a noise was heard and after a quick search, Barney, the owner, was found fast asleep behind the coldroom. Over three days they couldn't get Barney sober enough to talk business to and so left empty handed.
 
Today we drove straight through Eulo and continued on the Thargomindah road about 30klm looking for the turn-off to Yowah Opal fields. We heard that there is an and artist there, Melanie Hava, whose work we had seen and loved. Melanie has an Austrian father and an Aboriginal mother, and she melds both cultures into her artwork. Unfortunately, we underestimated the distance and turned back to Eulo for our mud-bath appointment. back in town we learnt that Melanie was away, so, next time!
 
On our trip we had heard about two places to visit, which turned out to be one. The Date Farm (as in fruit not potential lovers) and the Eulo Mud Baths famed for their therapeutic and cosmetic qualities. We hit the mud bath for about 90 minutes and it was just great. Nan, the owner, also provided a plate of nibbles and a great atmosphere. You do feel refreshed after the baths, but looking at ourselves, not too sure about the lasting cosmetic value.
 
The Eulo Queen, well the run of bad luck continues as we found the most inhospitable Publican in Australia in residence. He even made Jonno Mousers public relations manner look admirable. The pub is for sale once more and he did offer it to us, but a girl has standards and Evi put paid to that offer! :-(
