Stage 17 - Rest Day in Burgos

Burgos, Castile and León, Spain and Canary Islands
It was so lovely not to be getting up with the birds this morning. We slept in and just enjoyed a slow start to the day. We needed to get some washing done so that was on the agenda. Eva’s quirky apartment gave us a couple of challenges though. First it was cold, so I turned on the heaters to take the chill off the air.  I turned them off an hour later when the apartment had warmed up. When I went to get in the shower I discovered I’d accidentally turned off the hot water as well!  We solved that problem after a bit of head scratching.  Then we tried to turn the washing machine on. Couldn’t get it to work. Ended up having to text Eva for instructions. She first tried to give us instructions on the phone but quickly decided it would be easier to come over and sort us out in person. We were happy to see that we weren’t stupid after all. She had trouble with it as well.
We left washing hanging up all around drying and set out to explore Burgos. It’s a beautiful city with lots of pedestrian streets going every which way, built around its magnificent cathedral. The opulence and grandeur of the many chapels of the cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos have to be seen to be believed. Well worth a visit just to marvel at the incredible workmanship and artistry involved in its creation.
We decided to go on a tapas crawl for lunch. We found a lovely street named Calle de San Lorenzo with a number of tapas bars. We only managed two bars because the second one we tried was so good we stayed for seconds. It obviously had the approval of the locals.  By the time we left the bar it was full of local people. It’s a great way to eat. Small samples of lots of delicious things. I’m not sure that baked goods are considered tapas but we included a bakery as our last stop.
It’s been a lovely restful day in Burgos.  Only 5 kilometres covered today.  We’re feeling revived and ready for the next stage of our journey tomorrow.

Thoroughly enjoying your trials & tribulations. How great to meet lovely folk from around the world in such wonderful scenery. Missed you at social Bridge, but Colleen, Karen, Daphne & moi kept Speros entertained, while Andrea was sojourning up the coast. Enjoy!!!
