Old Town, Podgorica Municipality, MontenegroIt was about 2.30pm and 29 degrees and I only had this afternoon to explore Podgorica. The hotel staff was very friendly, good English, and provided maps and walking directions.
My hotel is next to the bus station so first I scouted it out and bus times for tomorrow then continued my walk.
First I made my way to Independence Square but it was a big paved lot and nothing to see. St George's is a small historic church up a hilltop but I didnt want to do all the walking after a long overnight flight and not slept much.
I made my way to the Millennium Bridge which faces the Moscow Bridge. Not much to see on either except the distant mountains.
For a Capital City it was pretty small and compact to get everywhere.
I made my way to Christ's Resurrection Cathedral. Aside from the nice artwork it was a place to cool off from the heat. I would be seeing more historical Orthodox Churches later in my trip.
Then I made my way thru a park and apartments to the Petrovic Castle. This was used as some contemporary art gallery so I didnt go in.
Now I wanted to cross the river back to the Old Town. Stara Varos as it is called was a small Ottoman town with a historic quarter remaining.
First I followed the minaret to the Osmanagic Mosque. There were some Turkish people visiting.
This leads to the Clock Tower. The map said there was another mosque thru a few more old streets.
The Old Town is bordered by the river and an old stone bridge. Essentially that was it and all the sights I wanted to see can easily be done in an hours walk except for the heat.
I stopped at a bakery which would become a lifeline in the Balkans and the food was so cheap. Then I made it back to the hotel to rest for my first night.
