Ravello, Atrani & lots of stairs

Amalfi Coast, Campania, Italy
We decided to visit Ravello, which is located in the hills behind Atrani (next town along from Amalfi) as we had heard rave reviews. The reports suggested catching the bus up & walking down the path that winds around the ills to the seaside.

The bus ride u the hilly road was an experience, it was crowded with both locals & tourists but at EUR1 .50 well worth it.

I didn't think the views could get any better, but WOW!!!! The town square has views from all sides, the terraced hillsides, the sea, the fields & the rooftops of the townships below.

Ravello is renowned for its ceramics. Urs & I managed to do some major damage to our credit cards in a family owned ceramics shop. It is al handmade & when they offer free shipping for spends over EUR200, what could we say.......can’t wait for it to arrive home.

It was soon prosecco time in a little trattoria. I probably need to clarify here, this is regular occurrence BUT it is extremely warm especially with all of the walking we do & prosecco is sooooo refreshing.

After our refreshment we walked back towards the main square via some shopping lanes & decided to go to Villa Cimbrone, which comprises 6 hectares of historic parkland . The brochure blurb states it is considered the most important examples of landscapes, botany & culture of England created in the Mediterranean area between the end of the 19th & beginning of the 20th centuries.

In Roman times it was an enormous estate & belonged to the noble Acconciajoco family. It fell into disrepair & was abandoned until it was discovered by an Englishman who bought it in 1904 & worked on restoring it.

I took so many pictures but cannot put them all up as adding pics takes so long to do on this bog page.

I have jumped ahead a bit as on the way to Villa Cimbrone we stopped for lunch (& more prosecco). The views from this ristorante were as usual amazing. The food was very good too!!!

We walked around the gardens for a while then stopped for coffee on the lawn terrace with views back down to Atrani & Amalfi and the sea .

I had read a number of reviews of Ravello & so many people said the highlight was walking back down the hillside to Amalfi via Atrani. I managed to convince the girls it would be worth it & after being assured by the locals it would take about 30-40-60 minutes....depending on who you asked, we set off.

It was a trek & then some......the girls took it slow & about 2 ½ hours later we arrived back in Amalfi.

I was no very popular for a while, but the eventually forgave me......I thought it was amazing & well worth the effort. After all we were only walking the track that the locals used for hundreds of years to access the coastal towns.

Needless to say early dinner & early to bed.......for some.

I wish I could share the amazing view by way of my pics, but my tablet does not like this website & will not co-operate when uploading photos. Will try a few different things when I get a chance.
I am only able to catch up withe blog when on trains or planes.......
