Valletta, Island of Malta, Malta
We decided today to take a ferry ride to Valletta, which is the ‘old walled town’ of Malta. The ferry takes about 5 minutes & gives a fabulous view of the old town.
I know I say everywhere is amazing, so Valletta gets added to that list . Everywhere you look it is another stunning view. Starting with the walk up the road from the ferry terminal along the windy street with all of the old port houses & shops.
The girls decided to watch a 5D show on the history of Malta. I don’t like the 3/4/5D experience so opted for coffee (the best since leaving home!!!) & shopping.....I found a market up the back of the town & found a great stall with lovely clothes. I figured as I was sending a box of stuff home I had already worn then I could replace the with new ones!!!
Met back up with the girls who loved my purchases so we visited the markets again & I bought some with a good discount for bringing 5 women with me who all bought something......
After we shopped it was time to walk & sight see. Sandra was on a mission to find St John’s or St Paul's Cathedral (there are so many they start to blend into one after a while......) which meant we traipsed all over Valletta in search of it.
Along the way we discovered some amazing buildings, churches & parks. We also found an a large town square with raised concrete circles in rows, we were trying to work out what they were for. We found an information that explained the square was an old grainery & the round circles were the old underground silos that had been covered over with concrete slabs to stop people falling into them!!!!!
Other points of interest were the Triton Fountain, Hastings Gardens, St John’s & St James Cavalier, Republic Square & Victoria Gate.
After a quick lunch a quick lunch stop (a pastizzi of course, when in Malta......) then found ourselves at the Upper Barracks Garden. What a view over harbour area & the gardens were just beautiful. We decided it was prosecco time whilst we waited for the canon blasting at 1pm. Which was a single blast & not worth the wait.
Finally Sandra located the cathedral & after a quick look we decided to have dinner in the square at a nice outdoor restaurant.
We made our way back to the ferry to head for Sliema.
